Fabricating directly from a BIM or CAD design model saves time and materials, prevents mistakes, and facilitates off-site fabrication. There are multiple Revit-centric fabrication software solutions available but fabricating from AutoCAD or other CAD packages can be challenging. This is a pain point for organizations that want to use CAD for some jobs and BIM for others. This presentation will focus on Therma’s mixed Revit and AutoCAD fabrication workflow using PypeServer software, from the selection of pipe, plumbing, and hanger assemblies for fabrication directly in their models, to fab shop management via the cloud, and nesting/cutting/labeling using both automated and manual tools.

David Basiji has worked with technology startups for most of his career. He started Amnis Corporation in 1999 to develop a novel cellular imaging technology and led the company until its sale in 2011.
David joined PypeServer in 2019 with the mission to establish the company as the industry-standard provider of fabrication software to MEP contractors that it is today.

Mike Chandler is currently the Fabrication Database Manager for Therma LLC, a Legence company, where he started as a Piping Detailer. Prior to joining Therma, Mike was a Piping Foreman and Detailer at Silicon Valley Mechanical.

VDC MEP Coordination meetings can make or break a preconstruction budget. They serve the tremendous benefit of providing signed off models (hopefully) at which point MEP trades are ready to fabricate and install. But they also come at a steep price as costly resources participate in painstaking coordination (and re-coordination) effort for often lengthy periods of time. With all the variables that play into coordination meetings, it can be very challenging for MEP firms to navigate them successfully. This course will cover basic education and best practices of productive and efficient VDC MEP Coordination Meetings. There will also be focus on strategies for VDC/MEP coordination to get clash free in fewer meetings. Ultimately, attendees will learn how to get the most out of future VDC Coordination Meetings.

Steve has worked his entire career in the VDC/BIM field, starting in 2005. Throughout that time he has performed BIM at every level – as a designer, modeler, detailer, lead detailer, BIM coordinator, and BIM Manager. Recently Steve has been given a new role at ACCO Engineering Systems: Construction Technology Manager – VDC, where he is focusing on how VDC workflows and data can be utilized and beneficial in other facets of the business. Steve was previously a BIM Manager at ACCO Engineered Systems for 14 years and has been instrumental in setting up and implementing BIM/VDC workflows throughout the company.

After many years of studying human behavior and dedicating his career to understanding what makes people ‘tick’, David Meade has become an influential and impactful speaker across the USA and Europe. Through his many leadership and strategic roles in the real estate, hotel and retail sectors, Meade has observed how people in the same role perform at different levels of effectiveness. He took that information back to one of Ireland’s leading universities where he merged his passion for sharing cutting-edge research with his enthusiastic love for performing. This energy has allowed him to wear many hats and titles successfully such as broadcaster, business leader, keynote speaker and master of ceremonies.
Instead of lecturing an audience with his research and business experiences, Meade values a more immersive and interactive approach. He believes attendees are more likely to get a full grasp of the session when they are engaged in the presentation and enjoy the material. This psychology-driven style of delivery has given Meade the chance to interact with corporate audiences from IBM, Harvard University, Citi Bank, Volkswagen, Facebook, British Airways, Apple Inc. and many more. After years of research, he has learned how to make meaningful change happen in his clients. Meade’s goal is to encourage fundamental changes that will leave individuals excited about future opportunities and the direction of their organizations.

The ability to visualize the scope of work for a project can be a challenge for Owners, Engineers, and Contractors. The problems that arise under these circumstances are countless. These can vary from clashes between new and existing infrastructure, misinterpretation of the design by the Owner or Contractor, constructability issues, and more. Mixed Reality (MR) provides a new way to review a model when onsite. At first, MR allowed our project teams to identify design issues much earlier in the project than ever before, enabling us to plan our work more effectively. After the value was immediately seen with our use of MR, we knew we had to get our Owner and Engineer partners involved. After a few design review meetings utilizing the MR, we realized that Owners are also able to identify changes they would like to see very early in the design process. This technology has significantly improved our design assistance and installation of the process mechanical work we put in place.

It’s no secret that construction faces some of the lowest profit margins compared to other industries. But just because that’s an industry standard doesn’t mean that MEP contractors can’t be more profitable. The opportunity for profitability lies in your ability to accurately and efficiently execute on projects by ensuring the right data flows to the right people at the right time. Connected Construction technology is the answer. Join this session to learn how one contractor is making that a reality. We’ll showcase how this technology can be used to connect teams and workflows together from design to install–and experiencing faster install as a result. Specific workflows covered will include: coordination and clash detection, design to procurement, design to fabrication, and field layout.
